Excessive Hair Growth Chicago
What is Excessive Hair Growth?
Excessive hair growth, or hirsutism, is a condition in which a person has coarse, dark hairs in areas such as the upper lip, chin, chest, abdomen, or back. Many women find it embarrassing or bothersome.
What causes Excessive Hair Growth?
Women normally produce low levels of male hormones (androgens). If your body makes too much of this hormone, you may have unwanted hair growth. A common cause of hirsutism is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Other rare possible causes of excessive hair growth are tumor or cancer of the adrenal gland, tumor or cancer of the ovary, Cushing syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperthecosis (a condition in which the ovaries produce too much male hormones), and use of certain medicines, including testosterone, danazol, anabolic steroids, glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, minoxidil, and phenytoin.
How can I treat Excessive Hair Growth?
There are a number of ways to remove or treat unwanted hair. Some treatment effects last longer than others. Temporary hair removal options include shaving, tweezing, waxing, and chemical hair removers. Permanent removal options can include electrolysis and laser hair removal. Not all patients are candidates for every treatment, so a consultation with one of our doctors is required.
