beautiful womanDesignated by the National Rosacea Society as Rosacea Awareness Month, April is the time of year that the group dedicates to informing the public on the warning signs of the skin disorder that now affects more than 16 million Americans. Rosacea is a skin disorder that not only manifests itself physically, resulting in facial redness and small bumps or pimples, but these mild physical symptoms can also cause emotional stress for patients who are embarrassed by their symptoms or assume that the redness or bumps are their fault, and not a symptom of a medical condition.

This year, the NRS plans to use Rosacea Awareness Month to bring light to the emotional toll that the skin disorder can take on patients. Many patients are embarrassed by even mild symptoms of the disorder, which can easily result in the worsening of symptoms when the individual faces emotional stress in public, then causing even greater stress, thus continuing the cycle.

The emotional effects of rosacea are much more common than you may think. According to a survey of 1,675 rosacea patients by the NRS, 90 percent claimed that the physical appearance of their rosacea symptoms had lowered their self-esteem, and 88 percent said they were embarrassed by the effect the disorder had on their skin. Furthermore, 52 percent of respondents said that they avoided face-to-face contact with others because of their skin disorder.

The good news? The NRS reports that more than two-thirds of the respondents said effective medical therapy for their rosacea symptoms improved their emotional and social well-being. And for those individuals who recognize the warning signs and seek medical help as soon as possible, diagnosis and proper care can bring their rosacea symptoms under control, thus lessening the emotional and social impact of the disorder.

In honor of Rosacea Awareness Month, Pinski Dermatology is offering a complimentary anti-redness Skinceuticals Biocellulose Mask with the purchase of a Dermasweep with Calming infusion.
