Razor Bumps (Pseudofolliculitis barbae) Chicago

What are Razor Bumps?

Razor bumps are a skin condition that is more common in males as a result of shaving. The condition can be caused by ingrown hairs that cause irritation, leaving red and inflamed bumps around the follicles, commonly known as razor burn.

What causes razor bumps?

The texture and growth pattern of the hair can create an inflammatory reaction in specific areas a razor is being used on. The body treats all ingrown hairs just as it would a splinter or any other foreign object by producing an inflammatory pimple-like bump. Often, if the condition occurs over an extended period of time, the skin will respond by producing unsightly dark spots at the sites of the PFB bumps. Unfortunately, these dark spots can take many months to fade. Since most African-American men have curly, coarse hair and curved follicles, they frequently suffer from razor bumps. This is also true for people of Mediterranean descent. It should be noted that razor bumps can affect anyone who has curly hair or has hair follicles orient at oblique angles to the skin surface, which makes it easier to re-enter the skin. The key to controlling PFB is to minimize hair re-entry back into the skin (and subsequent inflammation) by reducing the sharpness of the hair tip and to leave the hair tip at the appropriate length after shaving.

How can I treat razor bumps?

Razor bumps can be treated with specific topical products recommended by a provider to help with exfoliation of the area, along with ingredients to calm and soothe any active inflammation. When shaving, always work in the direction of hair growth with a fresh razor and a shaving gel. Laser Hair Removal can offer a more permanent solution by targeting the hair follicles themselves.
